Tips for Shopping at Department Stores
Department stores, found in malls or in shopping centers, are generally affordable super stores that offer a variety of items for sale. You can find just about anything you need at a department store, from clothing and shoes to toys and gifts. Most department stores have several departments, all categorized by type, such as appliances, sporting goods, electronics and ladies’ fashion. You’ll also find fitting rooms where you can try on garments. Keep these tips in mind when deciding which department store to shop at.

Tip #1: Inquire About the Return Policy
Stores vary widely on their return policies. Some are very good about taking back items with or without a receipt. Most offer a refund with a receipt within the specified time period, and merchandise credit without a receipt. But some department stores are more strict in their policies. By shopping at a department store with a more relaxed return policy, you can rest assured you can bring anything back and you’ll get some kind of credit to use at a later date. This offers customers peace of mind.

Tip #2: Inquire if the Store Carries Designer Brands
Many department stores carry lines of designer fashion clothing at discounted prices. You can really get a bargain and save money on the latest brands at a fraction of the cost. Conversely, most such stores also have a clearance section that offers the lowest prices in the whole store.

Tip #3: Ask if the Store Honors Web Deals
You may have found a great deal online on hardware, housewares or furniture but you don’t want to order online due to the high shipping costs. Many department stores will honor deals you find on the Internet. Or, many times you have the option of selecting in-store pickup when ordering from online retailers.

Owning and operating a department store takes a lot of work. Department store owners must spend a great deal of time deciding where to build their store before they can even begin to construct it. They must consider whether they would be able to make more money in a shopping mall or an outlet center or somewhere else entirely. Shopping malls and outlet centers appeal to customers, but they also charge steep monthly rents. Independent locations are more affordable, but they often attract fewer customers. Store owners must also decide if they want their store to feature some sort of online component - online stores are becoming increasingly popular these days.

After setting on a location, department store owners must decide what they want to sell. Clothing and apparel stores are always popular - for men and women alike. But it can be difficult to see to it that your clothes always stay trendy and fashionable. And it can be equally difficult to ensure that any accessory you offer customers - whether it's a handbag or perfume or pair of shoes - will sell well. Fashion-forward department stores and bridal outlets are tricky to maintain, for this reason. But home and garden stores can be tricky to maintain too. Owners must supply their customers with the trendiest furniture and bedroom accessories, like foam mattresses. They must also offer an extensive range of appliances - in a variety of styles - and plenty of decor items. Even children's toys stores present their own challenges!

Owning and operating a department store isn't easy, but it can be an incredibly lucrative endeavor.
