Questions to Ask When Hiring a Criminal Law Attorney

If you are arrested, you may need to find a reputable criminal law attorney. In most cases, this means you are being prosecuted by your state or federal government. Depending on your situation, you should be able to find a criminal law attorney that works specifically with the defense of suspects in your situation. There are a few questions to ask yourself before hiring your attorney.

  • Is my crime familiar to the criminal law attorney?
There are varying degrees of seriousness for criminal law. For example you may be convicted of a felony or a civil misdemeanor. While attorneys may work with a wide array of case types, many of them have a niche or specialty.

  • Are you convicted of a violent crime?
Violent crimes such as murder or homicide will require an attorney with experience in that type of case. A violent crime may also be a domestic dispute or hate crime.

  • Does your crime involve alcohol?
You can find an attorney that specializes in alcohol related criminal cases. This primarily includes drunk driving and DUI situations. The money you spend on the lawyer will be worth the cost if he or she is able to save you on the conviction or the degree of the fine.

  • Do you have enough money to hire an attorney?
Everyone is entitled to representation. If you are arrested and prosecuted for a crime, you are entitled to an attorney. If you can't afford one, then the court will provide an attorney to handle your defense. It is expected that it will be beneficial to hire your own lawyer rather than using a court-appointed attorney.
  • National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers
Our association represents top criminal defense attorneys and law firms across the nation. Don't spend another day unrepresented, and find a defense attorney who will work for you through our association.
