What to Ask a Crematorium

The process of making funeral arrangements can seem daunting when you're experiencing grief from the death of a loved one. If the deceased's final wishes include cremation, you'll need to find a reputable crematorium to handle the body. Keep these questions in mind to help simplify the process and allow you to focus on paying your respects.

  • Doe you offer space for memorial services?
Some facilities have special rooms where you can hold a viewing or funeral on the premises. If the crematorium does not offer this type of service, inquire if there is a nearby mortuary that can accommodate memorials.

  • Can a representative of the family observe the cremation?
Be cautious of facilities that do not allow witnesses. A reputable service should allow someone to watch the process to ensure that the ashes received are really those of the deceased.

  • Are your workers or your facility certified?
Several organizations provide certification for crematory workers and facilities, including the Cremation Association of North America and the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association. Certification attests to the skills and professionalism of a facility and its employees.

  • What options do you have available for the body and the remains?
If the crematorium allows on site memorial services, the facility may sell caskets for viewings. Most crematoriums also have a selection of urns available for the ashes in many price ranges. Some may even sell space in a cemetery for you to store the urn.

  • How do you handle the return of jewelry?
Crematoriums should have a policy on how they store and return valuables.

  • What do you do with prosthetic items?
If your loved one had a prosthetic limb or another item that cannot be cremated, the crematorium may require these items to be removed prior to the process. Otherwise, they should have a policy to arrange for their disposal or return.
  • Cremation Association of North America
The Cremation Association of North America was originally formed to promote the modern techniques in cremation and burial. Learn more about our association and the services our members provide today.

Once cremation is chosen after a death, the process of dealing with the deceased begins. The first step is to learn about how the cremation process works, by contacting a crematorium or mortuary. Learn about your choices in urns for the ashes, burial vs. scattering the ashes and the cost involved with the process. Most people find that cremation and a memorial service cost much less than a traditional burial of the body in a wood or metal casket in a cemetery, a viewing time and a formal funeral service.

Memorial services after cremation are usually arranged by the family but overseen by a religious leader. Some religions do not allow for cremation, so it is important to explore these restrictions before making the appointment with the crematorium. In some cases it may be better to go with a burial in the cemetery, adding proper clothing and jewelry to the body in the casket for the funeral prior to the graveside service.

The next step is to find a crematorium to perform the cremation for you. There are crematoriums that deal specifically with people and others that deal with pets, so know which one you are working with. A mortuary can often refer you to a service they commonly work with that other clients have liked and respected.

In the midst of your grief, it can be difficult to know what to do with the urn of ashes after the memorial service, but the mortuary will encourage you to begin making plans. The good news is that you don't have to make decisions directly after the death, if you prefer to wait until your grief has subsided. A family death is never an easy process, but dealing with the arrangements afterward can be a therapeutic way to deal with your loss.
