Questions to Ask About Credit Unions

In general a credit union will perform many of the same functions as a bank. However, they may offer a better interest rate if you want to save money. They may also offer lower rates on loans, for example if you need to finance a large purchase. Below are some questions to ask when looking to open an account.

  • Is membership restricted to residents of the local community?
Depositors are referred to as members instead of as customers. However, membership is limited to those that share a common bond, such as living in the same community, working for the same company, or being in the same profession.

  • What are your interest rates on an account and/or a loan?
These institutions typically offer very competitive rates to their members to finance purchases. However, the terminology is sometimes different than you are used to when dealing with a bank. For example a checking account is referred to as a share draft account. A check is referred to as a share-draft.

  • What type of insurance do you have for accounts?
All federal institutions of this type are insured by the National Credit Union Association. The NCUA is a regulatory agency and is also responsible for chartering and examining the federal institutions. However, accounts in many state-chartered institutions also may be insured by the NCUA, as is sometimes required by state law.

  • Are there any restrictions on when and how I can retrieve my money?
If you open a standard share draft account, the funds should be what is termed demand deposit, meaning that they are subject to withdrawal on demand. However if you decide to get a better interest rate by for example purchasing a certificate of deposit, then you will have to leave your money for the agreed fixed period of time or pay a penalty.

In today's busy world, it's more important than ever to manage your finances well and make sound, legal investments. It's also important to feel like you're part of a community of like-minded, financially independent individuals.

But few people understand exactly how most finance institutions work, and they are often unsure whether they ought to invest in a bank, or credit union, or some other institution entirely. Many people aren't entirely sure how credit unions differ from banks in the first place.

With a little research, though , you'll learn that credit unions, which are usually smaller than banks, offer approved individuals a wonderful way to invest their money.

These unions offer many of the same services as banks Customers can rely on them for their home equity and loan needs. They can also use them to make credit card purchases and finance their newest automobile. Checking and savings accounts are also commonly offered. Even ATM use is offered, just like at a bank. But, unlike banks, union interest rates are established by a volunteer board of directors, and that board is elected directly by the members.

In the United States credit unions can be chartered by the federal or state government. Estimates suggest that 86 million Americans are members of either a federal or state union.

Credit unions are safe, secure, and they offer members a wonderful sense of community and a wonderful way to manage their personal finances.

So, If the idea of becoming a member sounds appealing to you, contact a union to apply today and start to save your money instantly!
