Frequently Asked Questions About Counseling Services
Counseling services are helpful resources to many people in need of help to get better. Some people need marital counseling, while others need anger management counseling. Many people seek out counseling services in their area to feel better about their situation, get help and advice for their condition, and improve their behavior. Speak with a qualified professional about your drug abuse problems, couple problems or crisis problems. They can help. Here are some frequently asked questions you may find yourself asking when searching for a counseling service.

What kind of training does the counselor have?
Since there are so many kinds of counseling services around, it’s best to narrow down your search by specialty. Look for counselors that boast the background you need help with. If you feel you need medication for your mental health condition, you may want to enlist the help of a psychiatrist, as they are medical doctors who can prescribe medication. Social workers are specifically trained to work with families and children. And group counselors specialize in conducting group therapy with others in your same condition.

Would a male or female counselor be best?
While both males and female professionals are often both equally as qualified to dispense advice on anything from marriage and divorce to addiction and cognitive behavior, you may feel a personal connection to one gender over another. Perhaps you’re a woman who would feel more comfortable talking about your grief with another woman. Or maybe you’re a man who would feel better speaking with a woman, who may offer a nurturing and comfortable persona.

Is my insurance accepted?
Not all reasons for therapy are covered under your insurance plan. You may have to get medically evaluated by your doctor first, who can then recommend counseling. Often times, insurance companies need a doctor’s referral in order to cover part or all of a counseling session.

Counseling services are available to help you handle mental health problems. Counselors specialize in working with children, a family, people in a marriage and more. Issues such as grief, substance addiction, depression and more can be treated by a certified counselor. Here are questions to ask a counselor during your first visit to a center or clinic.

  • What are your specialties?
Counselors are experts in different areas from relationship issues to community crisis and more. It can help to find a counselor experienced with your particular mental or health problem. Also, ask if your counselor is experienced working with children, families, individuals or couples to ensure that their skills meet your needs.

  • What is your experience and education?
Counselors have different levels of education, certifications and trainings. A psychologist has a doctoral degree as well as additional mental health education. Counselors can become certified with a four year college degree and additional training.

  • Are you affiliated with a particular center or clinic?
Counselors often work in community centers, schools, colleges, support homes for abused men, women and children and more. Counselors at certain centers will specialize in specific areas.

  • How can you help me achieve my mental health goals?
Before your first session it is best to have an idea of what you want to achieve in counseling treatment. For example, if you have a problem with substance abuse, your goal may be to become sober within an amount of time or if you suffer from grief your goal may be to better understand your feelings and how to handle them. Based on your goals, your counselor will be able tell you how they plan on helping you and your family reach them.
