Important Questions for Paving Contractors

If you are looking to update the driveway for your home, or install a blacktop in your backyard, you will need to find an excellent paving contractor. Interviewing these contractors before you work with them can help you save time and money by ensuring they are experienced, and provide exceptional customer service and work. Consider using the questions below to get you started on the interviewing process.

  • What types of materials do you usually use?
If you have a certain landscape aesthetic you are trying to maintain around your home, you may only want to use materials like marble, pavers, or interlocking stone patters. If the contractor you like only offers asphalt, cement or concrete, you will need to find someone else to work with.

  • Do you offer estimates for your work?
It is important to get an estimate before undertaking any project, especially if you can get that estimate in writing. This can help prevent contractors from overcharging you on unforeseen costs, like grading or excavation services, at the end of the project.

  • What is the warranty policy on your work?
If the concrete in your sidewalk cracks soon after installation, you will want a contractor that will cover his work. And, even with the best professionals, cement slabs can settle incorrectly when they are poured, so make sure these issues will be repaired, without any additional costs to you.

  • What projects do you specialize in?
You will want to work with someone who can meet the goals you have set out for your project. A paving contractor that specializes in installing blacktops or asphalt parking lots for commercial properties, may not be the best fit to install your residential driveway.

Paving contractors are integral in the construction of new buildings and roadways. During large construction projects and remodeling jobs, they are called upon to lay concrete foundations and create patios and block outdoor spaces. When completing commercial work, they are often a part of a general contractor's team, doing much of the work involving laying slabs of stone or doing any outdoor landscape features involving masonry.

While they may take the lead role on building driveways or laying asphalt for streets, they often work in conjunction with other members of a construction team. For large transportation projects, flag men will help to direct traffic around them during their paving work. When working on a building that requires excavation and demolition before work can begin, they may employ engineers for tearing down a building. Though preliminary grading work is often done by the paving crew, this is not always the case.

The responsibilities and skills needed to be a residential paving professional differ slightly from commercial work. Often, they are charged with laying stone, brick or gravel for those with smaller driveways and paths. Most are equipped to work with blacktop, cement and concrete as well, and will do everything from laying down the surface to sealing and coating it to ensure it will last. Surfacing for asphalt and blacktop is also available to the residential customer, in which tar or other sealants are used to add years to the life of the material.

The heavy machinery that pavers must operate, like cement trucks, requires special training and, often, a special driver's license. In addition to these special skills, both residential and commercial pavers must be fully insured as a condition of their contracts. This important service goes a long way in keeping transportation routes functional and homes beautiful.
