Computer Printer Terminology
The following are some terms related to computer printers:

All-in-One: All-in-one printers are multifunction devices. These devices can print, copy, and scan documents. Many multifunction printers can also serve as fax machines.

Carriage: The carriage is the part of a computer printer that moves the printhead from side to side. As the carriage moves back and forth, ink or toner is distributed onto the media.

Ink Jet Printer: An ink jet printer uses quick-drying ink to form text and images. Ink jet printers are efficient and effective, and they typically use black and color ink.

Laser Printer: A laser printer uses heat and static electricity to attach toner particles to the media. Originally, laser printers could only produce black and white documents, but color toner is now available. Laser printers are derived from the technology of early copy machines.

Media: The media is what a computer printer places text or graphics onto. Media can range from standard envelopes to glossy photo paper.

Platen: The platen is the glass that a document or photo is placed on in order to be copied or scanned. Platens can be moving or stationary.

Printhead: In an ink jet printer, the printhead is the part of the device that is needed for ink distribution. This includes the nozzles and the electronics involved in spraying them.

Print Buffer: A print buffer is computer printer memory that can temporarily store documents and images. Items are stored here as the printer prepares to perform the job, which frees up computer resources so they can be used for other tasks.

Queue: The queue is the job list of a computer printer. The items in a queue are typically arranged in the order they are received by the printer. Some computer operating systems allow users to prioritize – and even cancel – different print jobs.

If you are in the market for a computer printer, take some time to consider your specific needs. For example, if you are printing a report or school paper, you won't need the advanced capabilities of a large color laser printer. If you are doing a lot of bulk printing of word documents, or reams of printed material, an inkjet printer would cost you more down the road after replacing the ink cartridge a few times. In this case, laser printers would probably work best for you. If you're interested in quickly producing receipts, you would want to look into dot matrix printers. Today, dot matrix printers mainly appear at gas stations, ATMs, and other points of sale. All three types of printers are available in black & white printing. If images are paramount, look into laser printers as they have a higher resolution color printing than inkjet, including colors like magenta, yellow, cyan, black, and white. For personal printing purposes, look in your local yellow pages to find nearby computer supply stores. Some may also offer repair services. This is good, as after a while, your printer may need new cables, ink or tone cartridges, and other internal maintenance work on various parts. If you're buying for a commercial business, try contacting various manufacturers directly to get discount wholesale prices. Wholesale prices on parts and repair services may also be available. Be sure to ask all of your questions before making a decision about your final printer purchase. The internet is always a great resource for research. Whether you are an individual or a commercial business, searching for the cheapest prices is most convenient online.
