How do I choose a bank?

Whether you already have several bank accounts or you're a student opening your first one, it can never hurt to find out more about what type of bank is right for you. From savings, to checking, to money market and even loans or credit cards, educating yourself is the best way to make smart banking investment decisions with your hard earned money.

  • What are the ATM fees?
Many financial institutions charge you a fee for using another bank's ATM. If you like the convenience of using ATM machines, make sure you know what fees your prospective bank charges. Also make sure that there are plenty of your bank's ATM machines near your home or work so that you won't fall into the trap of having to pay unnecessary fees.

  • Is it convenient?
Do you like to go to the bank and deal with real people? Whether you're a small business or a student, you should be able to find a bank that is conveniently located from your home, work, or both. Make sure to research the distance of your nearest bank branch before deciding where to put your business.

  • What accounts and services do they offer?
What types of accounts do you need? Do you just want a basic checking or savings account, or are you interested in investing some money for interest in a CD or taking out a personal loan? Most banks offer a variety of account services, but make sure that the bank you go with has the accounts and services that meet your needs.

  • Do they offer online banking?
Do you like to do your banking from the comfort of your home computer? Make sure that you can perform basic internet financial transactions, such as online payments and transfers.

If you are good with money, consider a career in banking and finance. You could work in a bank, or even get a job as a financial planner.

There are many positions you could hold at a bank. As a loan representative, you can lend people money for mortgages and school. You would be responsible for getting people reasonable rates on home loans. You might also get them a low interest student loan that makes it possible for them to go to college.

Or you could work as a teller, helping people open checking and savings accounts. You will help them with their personal and business accounts, ensuring them that their money is taken care of. You might also help them obtain a credit card or transfer cash. Some days, you might help people access their safety deposit boxes or use the ATM.

In either of these positions, you will most likely work in a small bank or at a large commercial branch. You should be very good with numbers and be comfortable using the internet, as many banks now offer online accounts.

If you are more interested in investments, consider becoming an investment broker. You will help people yield the highest interest on their money by finding them worthy investments. From having them deposit into a high interest savings account to buying stocks, you will walk them through every step. To be a broker, you will most likely need a degree in finance.

Whether you are teaching your customers to use checking accounts or helping them invest wisely, a career in banking can be both lucrative and rewarding.
