Questions to Ask Bowling Centers

Bowling used to be a nine pin game until 1841, when people got around a ban against ninepin bowling by simply adding a tenth pin. An enduring sport, tenpin bowling can be great fun whether you throw all strikes and spares or mostly gutter balls. For improving your score or just celebrating a birthday, find an alley that you can patronize in your community. Ask these questions when comparing bowling centers.

  • What types of league do you have, and how do I join?
Types of leagues include youth, adult, men’s, women’s, senior citizen and all-inclusive. There are also professional leagues that play in tournaments. You will usually pay an upfront membership cost, which will often give you a discount to come in and practice.

  • Do you have special rates for kids?
Many centers will give kids a discount per game and for shoe rental.

  • Do you have cosmic bowling?
Cosmic bowling is a party style of bowling in which the alley creates a club atmosphere with lights and music. It usually happens on the weekends and late at night.

  • What about party packages?
When ordering a party package, you will be charged a flat rate per person, which includes 1-3 hours of bowling, a certain amount of lanes, shoe rental, food and refreshments.

  • What food and refreshments do you serve?
From pitchers of beer and soda to pizza and hot dogs, ask about your dining options and prices.

  • Do you sell merchandise?
For anything from bowling shirts and bags to satin jackets and special equipment, find out if the alley has merchandise for sale.

  • What is your cleaning policy?
Balls, lanes and rented shoes can become cesspools for germs. If you have bad allergies or a child who gets sick easily, be sure to find out how often the alley is cleaned.

"I recently went to Classic Bowl because I had heard they had done some renovations, were under new management, etc... WORST BOWLING MISTAKE OF MY LIFE! The computers kept messing up, and are really touchy. The monitors are hard to read. The balls look like they let animals chew on them and weights are not clearly marked. Their shoes are falling apart and the entire establishment, except the bar, l ..."

A bowling center is a collection of lanes where participants can use a ball to knock down pins. Bowlers, beginners and professionals, can engage in this ten pin game where the object is to knock down those ten pins by rolling a ball down a lane while wearing proper bowling shoes.

The bowling alley usually hosts events on a weekly basis. For example, they may rent the alley out for special events like a birthday party. Other days of the week they may offer half-price bowling prices. After hours they may open lanes for adults only. On weekends they may host cosmic bowling for kids at a certain time. You may also rent your equipment, like balls and shoes, from the bowling center. Stores located in the center specialize in selling bowling bags, shirts, jackets and shoes. Bowling leagues also rent out lanes for annual tournament and championship games.

Bowling instructors help people by teaching them how to hold a ball and increase their score. Instructors help beginning bowlers mark the score of a strike or spare in different ways. Beginning bowlers experience getting a gutter ball often, but a bowling instructor teaches how to avoid the gutter ball. The instructor also teaches alignment, equipment and other physical and mental aspects that can contribute to a good game.

Other recreation centers with billiards, arcades and game rooms are also found at bowling centers. At times, the bowling center may also incorporate such activities in a separate part of the same establishment. Game rooms may bring in more customers that will spend money playing games and completing a round of bowling. There’s no doubt that your local bowling center is a hub for recreational fun for both children and adults.
