Sandwich Terms
Sandwiches can range from snacks, to appetizers to complete meals. Here is a list of popular types of sandwiches:

Panini: In Italy, a panini sandwich is a type of cured meat and cheese sandwich served on either a baguette or ciabatta roll that may or may not be toasted. In the United States, a panini is any kind of grilled and pressed sandwich which typically contains a cheese of some kind, but can feature nearly any kind of ingredient from roasted vegetables to chicken and tuna salads.

Club Sandwich: A triple decker, toasted sandwich commonly featuring a layer of lettuce and tomato, a layer of chicken or turkey and a layer of bacon between three slices of bread. There are variations to this theme wherein roast beef, ham and cheese are added in addition to the principal ingredients.

Hoagie: Also commonly known as a sub, grinder or hero, a hoagie sandwich is a large sandwich on a large oblong roll of Italian or French bread that can have any number of fillings, but commonly features cured or fresh meats such as salami, ham, turkey or roast beef, cheeses such as provolone, Swiss or American and vegetables such as lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber pickles and pickled peppers.

Patty Melt: A grilled hamburger sandwich served on rye bread with onions and cheese.

Banh Mi: A Vietnamese sandwich served on a French baguette filled with pork or chicken, cucumber slices, cilantro, pickled carrots and chili sauce.

French Dip: A roast beef sandwich served on a French roll that is accompanied by a dipping sauce commonly made from beef broth, roast beef drippings and red wine.

Muffuletta: A large Italian-American sandwich featuring a large, round loaf of bread that has been hollowed out and filled with mortadella, pepperoni, ham, salami, provolone and Swiss cheese, olives and pickled peppers. This large sandwich is often pressed and baked so that the cheese is melted, and then sliced into individual servings.

Whether you like pastrami on rye or low fat turkey on a hoagie, you can find sandwiches at your local grocery store, fast food joints, restaurants, delis, and convenience stores. Go online to research the history of the sandwich, learn where the best sandwiches are in your area, read reviews, get listings, and even download some tasty hot and cold wrap recipes with fillings such as cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, or mayo. Before choosing the perfect sandwich, contact several different shops and restaurants to get location, hours, price ranges, sandwich selection, and specials of the day. Inquire if the company is part of a national chain, or locally owned and operated. Research the restaurant's reputation in the business, as well. You want to choose a sandwich maker that sells healthy, delicious sandwiches that are affordable and priced right. Check out the physical location, making sure it is clean and well maintained. Are staff members helpful and accommodating? Make sure the shop offers the types of sandwiches you want, for the price you want, such as gourmet deli hoagies or nutrition-conscious clubs on toast or paninis. Inquire about the menu to find out what the store specializes in, such as chicken stir-fry subs with low fat spread, Italian subs, or vegetable pita pockets. Types of bread include rye, low carb, wheat, white, roll, or pita. Sandwich fillings can feature turkey, low fat dressings, deli meat, peanut butter and jelly, steak, veggies, ham, bologna, chicken, tuna, avocado, and pastrami. Inquire about freshness and any specials or promotions going on. Before choosing the best place for a club sandwich or sub, keep in mind the shop's hours, location, friendliness of staff, sandwich selection, prices, and reputation.
