What to Ask a Photographer Before a Signing a Contract

Family portraits and baby pictures can become treasured heirlooms that get handed down from generation to generation. That's why hiring the right photographer to shoot a wedding or senior portrait is of utmost importance. Here are a few questions to ask before hiring a photographer or studio to shoot these milestone events.

  • Who owns the copyright on the pictures?
Unless there is a specific transfer of the copyright, in writing, it belongs to the photographer. This issue can cause real problems, especially if the photographer wants to use your family portrait or head shot for promotional purposes. Get this issue worked out before signing any contracts with the studio.

  • Is the photographer shooting another event or wedding that same day?
Very few credible photographers will attempt shooting more than one wedding in a single day. Photo studios that can't devote a full day for a wedding should be avoided.

  • Does the photographer have portfolio of recent shoots?
Take a close look at the photographer's recent work and make certain it conforms to your standards. And don't just look at a completed album. Ask to see the proofs that show every shot from the day. This will give a good overview of how he'll operate on the big day.

  • Is there a sitting fee?
Some photographers charge a different fee for their time that is separate from any photo packages. This charge is frequently non-refundable.

  • What is the photographer's style or specialty?
Every photo studio has a specialty. But the photographer who specializes in head shots for actors might not necessarily be the best choice to shoot a Senior portrait.

If you love taking pictures, consider becoming a photographer at a portrait studio. You will help your clients make lasting memories by getting them the perfect picture.

There are a variety of photos you might take. For example, they may be for a family, wedding party, or a couple’s engagement. You might take head shots for an actor’s portfolio or for a senior yearbook. From a new baby to a family holiday card, there are a lot of shots you might take.

To become a photographer, you will need to have a deep knowledge of cameras, including using lighting and the flash. You need to understand how to use interesting angles and poses to enhance a portrait.

You should also have an eye for style, as the look of each photo is very important. For example, you might have to fix the hair, make up or dresses in a wedding party. It is important to be comfortable with designing an environment. The space can help bring out a client’s individuality, so you might add props and costumes, or shoot in a boudoir to set the tone. You should also know how to use photo editing technology such as airbrushing to enhance photos. A client looking for a head or wedding shot won’t want to see any flaws.

To find a job at a photo studio, contact local studios and send them your portfolio. The quality of your work is more important than your educational background. If you land a job, be good to your clients and they will refer more people to your service.

A career as a photographer is both exciting and rewarding, and can allow you to make a living doing what you love.
