Questions to Ask Pet Kennels

You want to choose a pet kennel that can take good care for your dog, cat, or other type of animal. First appearances, however, don’t always tell you everything that you need to know about a kennel. Use the questions below to help you decide whether a business can offer the boarding services that will make you feel comfortable leaving your pet with them.

  • Does your facility have an area for dogs to interact with each other?
Dogs are social animals that need to interact with each other. Sitting in a crate all day can cause a lot of stress. A play area, however, can help them relax and have a good time. A fenced area outdoors or an indoor area could offer your dog a safe place to play.

  • Does anyone on your staff have medical experience?
Your dog or cat could experience a sudden illness while you are away. Find out whether the kennel has someone with medical experience to treat and identify illnesses or injuries.

  • Do you offer home pet sitting services?
Many kennels offer home daycare services as well as overnight boarding. If you just need someone to make sure your pet has enough food and water, then you might want to consider using a kennel that offers pet sitting rather than daycare services.

  • Do you walk pets regularly?
Some breeds need frequently activity. If you have a high energy dog that needs to run and play, then you might want to find a kennel that walks animals at least twice a day.
  • Pet Care Services Association
Pet Care Services Association members offer a variety of services for your pet including boarding, dog daycare, grooming, training, pet transportation, shipping, pet supplies, food sales, etc.

"It is very very well kept up and clean and very nice, My 2 dogs were so well loved, and taken care of here. They took them out once a day and let them run on the ground and they even played ball with my dogs. For most owners, we worry about our dogs getting kennel cough, this place was so well kept up and clean, even having my dogs vaccinate for kennel cough, my dogs did not get sick after ward. ..."

"We used Jeanne's on Appleway and we were very disappointed with the service/treatment. Jeanne's closes every day from 12-2:30pm with no emergency contact, pager or other way to reach them, so if you need to access or pick up your dog between that timeframe, you're out of luck. This is very inconvenient and irresponsible. It appeared to us that most of the staff (if not all) leave during that tim ..."

A number of men and women work for pet kennels, animal boarding facilities, and day care establishments for dogs and cats. This can be a very enjoyable line of work, and is ideal for individuals that love spending time with animals. Since there are pet sitting facility locations all over the country, there are a lot of work opportunities in this business. Furthermore, you may get a chance to work with countless cat and dog breeds, as well as ferrets, bunnies, large birds, and even guinea pigs. Just so you are aware, different pet kennels deal with different kinds of animals, and have different restrictions.

You will notice that many dog and cat boarding facilities have both indoor and outdoor environments for pets to run, play, and hang out. In order to work in this field, it is important for you to receive the right kind of training, which is often given to you at the pet day care or kennel facility you work for. You will need to be familiar with different types of portable crates for cats, large cages for dogs, and fences that allow various animals to walk around, but without getting loose. Since many people will leave their pets over night, they will expect them to be groomed, and receive the right kind of feed. Many pet owners will even bring in food for their animals from home.

When you work at a kennel or become a professional pet sitter at a boarding facility, you can expect to deal with countless pet owners, as well as small cats, dogs, and other domesticated animals.
