Questions to Ask an Optician

If your optometrist has recently recommended you need glasses or contacts, then you will need to find an optician. Choosing an optician means finding a professional that you trust to create tools that are essential to your eyesight. This is a professional that can directly influence your day to day life, so be sure to interview a few before deciding. These questions may assist you in making your decision.

  • What products do you have available?
Before you visit the optician, call ahead. See if the eyewear company has a wide selection of reading glasses, frames, and other products available. For instance, not all companies are able to order color contact lenses for their clients. You may even want to ask about a specific brand that you know fits you well.

  • What training do you have to work as an optician?
Although these professionals do not require years of study in the the science of optometry or ophthalmology to practice their craft, they do require some training and certification. In fact, some opticians even help invent new corrective eyewear or ocular devices. Make sure whomever you visit is up to date on all of latest advances in lenses, and fully certified!

  • Do you have a partnership with any of the local optometry offices?
These two professions often work closely one another. If the optician you are visiting has a working relationship with one of the local optometrists or ophthalmologists, you may be able to get a discount on both your appointment, and the rimless glasses you are interested in purchasing!

Some individuals work as opticians, which can be an exciting field to get involved with. Although ophthalmologists study and treat ocular conditions and disorders, opticians deal with prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses. Therefore, in this field you will handle all kinds of rimless eyewear, color contacts, designer spectacles and unique frame designs. After all, it is your job to assist people who are near sighted or far sighted. You can prescribe them the right eyewear to correct their vision. Since optometry experts are needed all over the country, there are a number of potential opportunities in this field.

You will need a certain level of schooling and training in order to enter this ocular field. This training and education will help you become better acquainted with eye examinations and vision tests, as well as the devices or equipment used in this line of work. You will also deal with reading spectacles, designer frames, corrective contact lenses and clinical prescription eyewear regularly. It is your job to teach people how to properly care for their eyes and eyeglasses. While you may need to assist a teenager with getting color contact lenses one day, you may need to assist an elderly individual with getting the right corrective bifocals the next day.

In the optometry field, you will always deal with a variety of different people. Some of these individuals will be other opticians, as well as eye doctors and ophthalmology experts. You will also deal with many children, teens and adults on a regular basis, fitting them with eyewear for their specific needs.
