Fraternities and Sororities

Greek life often plays a central role for members during their college and academic experience. Fraternity and sorority houses typically offer a wide range of services to its members. These usually encompass the range of a student’s social and academic activities. For instance, most Greek houses offer living accommodations for their students. In addition, communal dining halls are typically found at many chapter houses. These are often provided to foster a sense of brotherhood or sisterhood amongst the members of the organization.

Many types of fraternities and sororities exist. Some are specifically centered around providing community service or charity work within their college town and outlying areas. Others are focused around a particular spiritual or religious orientation. In addition, many houses are dedicated to advancing their member’s scholastic achievement. A fraternity or sorority house’s initiation ceremony often reflects the form of involvement a house has in their college and community.

In most states, fraternities and sororities are considered private organizations. Therefore, they are not subject to special regulation by state or federal agenices. However, some universities in the U.S. have decided to ban fraternities and sororities from their campuses. This has partially been the result of controversies raised from pledges being improperly or aggressively hazed by existing members. Other reasons include objections to exclusionary and discriminatory practices by some chapters.

Information on rushing a fraternity or sorority can often be found on the national chapter’s website. In addition, houses often provide prospective pledges with an opening orientation. In addition, pledges can schedule meetings with the chapter president and other organizers. For many, the Greek system instills a lasting legacy of friendship and companionship that lasts beyond college. The mutual support and fellowship established by a fraternity or sorority can last a lifetime.

Rushing a fraternity or sorority is part of the typical college experience. Most colleges have frats and sororities with ties to national Greek organizations. The long legacy of the organization gives members a sense of school spirits and brotherhood or sisterhood. If the only thing you know about Greek life are things that you have learned from movies, then you might not really understand what the organizations do. While some frat houses definitely have a reputation for hazing and other behaviors that could be harmful to the physical and mental health of students, most of them have rigorous academic requirements and are active in charity organizations that help the communities they live in. You can contact your school to ask them what types of religious, academic, or social fraternity and sorority houses they support. Once you have their names, you can contact each one to help you decide which one you want to pledge for. As a pledge, you might be subject to some initiations, but you should never let yourself be persuaded to participate in activities that could be defined as hazing. Most university presidents keep a firm stance against such activities and students involved in Greek life can be expelled or reprimanded by law enforcement and national organizations if they are found guilty of hazing. Ask the organizations if they have a house on campus that you can use at your convenience. Ask them what charities they support and what academic qualifications they require. When you find one that is right for you, you can be proud to wear your sweatshirt or sweater around campus.
