    Appraisers are able to assess the value of an object by comparing it to others like it. Whether it is a home, a work of art or a piece of jewelry, an appraisal will assign it a value based on the cost of similar items which have successfully sold in a similar market recently. Real estate appraisers, whether working for tax districts or management firms, must complete as many as 90 hours of coursework to receive their licenses. Classic auto appraisers must be able to accurately weigh the condition of the vehicle against its scarcity and the current market interest to set a price. Those whose domain of expertise includes diamonds or antiques will often be students of history and will have apprenticed with leading auction houses to learn their trade.

    By assigning a value on hard to price items, appraisers help to ensure that sellers and insurance policy holders are properly compensated for their property.
