Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Kennel for your Dog or Cat

Most dog or cat owners will need to employ the services of a boarding house or kennel at some point. Whether you're traveling for work, planning a vacation, or simply looking for a dog or cat sitting professional for daily use, keep the following questions in mind before choosing an establishment for your pet.

  • Do you have a veterinarian on staff?
If you will be away from your beloved pet for any amount of time, consider selecting a care center that keeps a veterinarian on call. If your cat or dog takes daily medication or is being treated for a serious condition, this may be especially important.

  • What is the pet per staff ratio?
Asking about the number of animals boarded as compared to the number of staff employed will tell you many things. First, you will know how much access to companionship your animal will have during its stay. Additionally, a lower ratio suggests the animal will be less limited to a kennel and perhaps even have access to training from an expert.

  • Which breeds are accepted at your kennel?
Some kennels may specialize in larger or smaller breeds, while others may have no restrictions on size for animal sitting. If your animal is prone to separation anxiety, you might consider boarding it in a breed-specific shelter.

  • Do you offer grooming services?
Take care to shop around for a kennel that not only watches your pet, but pampers it. Grooming can be especially important when your animal is in a new environment so you can avoid infections or flea problems.
  • The Pet Care Services Association
Pet Care Services Association members offer a variety of services for your pet including boarding, dog daycare, grooming, and training.

Pet services can by a very rewarding line of work to get involved with. Regardless of whether you are a veterinarian, cat grooming professional, dog training expert, or work in a pet supply store or shop, it can be a blast working with pets all day. Many workers in this industry commonly get involved with various breeds or cats, dogs, snakes, birds, and rabbits. While some of these animals are small, others are large. It just depends on the professional sitting, health, grooming, adoption, and transportation services you provide.

There are different levels of expertise required for pet services. While someone who works at a pet food and toys supply store may only need basic training, cat and dog groomers require some schooling to properly learn the craft. Since there are in home grooming, pet sitting, and countless boarding facilities for animals all over the nation, there is plenty of room for employment in this field. Just be aware that you may have to deal with anything from dog owners that travel a great deal, to professional kennels, to animal portraits, to vacation facilities for pets that function like hotels. Extra care may be required for littler pets such as birds and miniature dogs. You must keep in mind that the animal is someone's companion, and it is up to you to supply the animal with everything it needs, and care for it properly.

Any time you work for professional dog kennels, pet groomers, or animal shelter services, you can expect to work with numerous pet owners all the time. This is simply part of the job.
