Also, if you live in a state that has deregulated the utilities industry, you can shop around to different providers to find the lowest cost. When talking with a prospective gas company, it's important to keep a few questions in mind.

  • What do I do to begin using natural gas?
    Explain what you'll use natural gas for in your home or office. What you need to do to switch from oil-based or electric heat to gas may be very different than what it takes to hook up a fireplace, stove, or energy-saving drying machines or to replace propane in an outdoor grill.

  • Can you recommend anyone to install the pipeline?
    It is typically your responsibility to find someone to set up the line for your gas service. The gas company should have a list of reputable contractors who can drill into the ground or walls to install the line. You may want to ask the gas company for someone experienced in your type of project, such as installing a line to power a product like a fireplace.
