Important Terms to Know About Dental Laboratories
Dental technicians create medical devices for the teeth, mouth and jaw within dental laboratories. This is a facility where devices such as dentures, veneers, bridges, and crowns are created. Technicians use the measurements of your teeth, taken via molds by your dentist, and apply those measurements to the creation of your very own customized device. Check out these important terms about dental laboratories:

Medical Device: Any product used for medical purposes, usually in reference to physical devices rather than medicinal devices, which involve pharmaceuticals.

Dental Implant: A device made to resemble a natural root, made of titanium, designed to support a tooth. Root form endosseous implants are installed within the bone to fuse with the surface and surrounding bone.

NADL: Stands for National Association of Dental Laboratories, formed in the United States in 1951. It aims to achieve high standards and work together in solidarity for the dental laboratory trade.

Prosthetic Device: A corrective device comprising of a replacement for one part of the body. In dental terms, this can refer to dentures and crowns, which essentially replace missing teeth.

Implant-Supported Fixed Partial Denture: Also known as a dental bridge, this device can be screw retained or cemented depending on the patient. With screw-retained prosthesis, you can remove the bridge if you need to. However, you cannot remove a cemented bridge.

Osseointegration: From the Greek meaning “to make whole,” this refers to the connection between living bone and the surface of an artificial implant, such as a titanium post. This has enhanced techniques concerning the science of medical bone and joint replacement.

Most patients, when they go to the dentist, will never deal directly with a dental laboratory. The crowns, bridges, dentures, veneers and other equipment they create for patients are usually handled in a separate facility from the dentist’s office. However, if you wish to be better informed about the company that will help to repair your smile, or if you are a dentist seeking a reliable, qualified lab, here are a few questions to ask a dental laboratory technician.

  • What services do you offer?
Most full service labs provide all of the appliances and equipment used in cosmetic dentistry, and to repair damaged or discolored teeth. These include porcelain veneers, ceramic implants and full or partial dentures.

  • How quickly will the pieces I need be ready?
Ask about average turnaround time for each order.

  • What do you need to create the pieces?
Technicians work with dentists to prepare dentures and implants that fit properly. Ask if the lab works from traditional impressions, or if it can also work from digital color imaging software.

  • Do your materials meet FDA standards?
The Food and Drug Administration regulates the metal and ceramic materials used in dental appliances. Make sure the lab is compliant with these regulations. The American Dental Association has its own set of regulations as well.

  • What are the qualifications of your technicians?
Ask about the education and training that technicians have received, and if they meet all industry standards.

  • What are your prices?
Ask about prices for each piece ordered, as well as any ordering terms and conditions.
