The field of custom picture framing is not a difficult one to break into. Some craft stores have a custom framing section where you can receive basic training on how to craft these frames. For simpler products, basic carpentry skills are all that's needed, especially since most pieces are pre-sculpted and just need measuring and cutting. The major medium you'll be working with to frame art will be wood, but you will be trained in materials like metal and acrylic. Even though you won't be working with them as much, you'll still have to have knowledge on ready made pieces, like poster frames, in the store. Each company will train you accordingly.

If you're looking to start your own business and make more personalized pieces, it's best to get training from a school. The American Picture Framing Academy holds seminars around the country to teach not only the crafting skills, but also the business skills needed to be successful. Other schools, like the West Art Picture Framing School, have physical shops where you can learn the craft. These schools will teach you how to work with the wood to make shapes (round, oval, square, rectangle, etc.) for portrait or collage display. You will learn how to properly cut mats, what type of plastic or glass to use for the photo you're displaying, and whether the product calls for a flat board back or a hinge back for wall mounting purposes. Advanced course will train you in scroll work for fancier frames.

One of the essential skills needed for your own business is ordering supplies. The cheapest option is to buy materials, like cardboard and wood, wholesale in bulk. Your ready made photo frames can be top quality, but your overhead costs will be down.

Custom and ready made frames will come in many different prices. If you're interested in buying multiple items you might find that wholesale stores are the best way to buy in bulk for a cheaper price than what retail craft and art stores would sell. Talking, magnetic, oak, ornate, and other frames will come in various designs so you can match your portrait, photo, or personalized collage. Glass, acrylic, plastic, or plexiglass will range in price depending on the quality you choose. Metal and wood custom portrait frames can come in round, oval, or square versions. If your photo or portrait is an unusual size that ready made frames don't have, choosing a store to make a custom frame will guarantee that it fits perfectly and doesn't look too big for the picture. A supply store will have various products ready for sale at discount prices. Poster board, cardboard, and other supplies will also need to fit the picture frame in order for everything to last as long as possible. Metal and wood options are the most common and can be found in many different sizes and styles so you can easily match the look of your home or office. Giving a gift with a favorite photo is very common for any occasion. Look online for a craft or art store and call to ask if they do custom framing. If so, see if you can just come in and give them the dimensions or if they will need to make an appointment. If you need it back by a certain time make sure you ask to see how long they expect it to take for your order to be complete.
