Questions to Ask at Pharmacies

The pharmacy is a fast, friendly and efficient place to pick up prescriptions, medicine and other health products. Professional, educated and experienced pharmacists are on hand to answer questions and assist with medication needs. Drug stores with a 24 hour pharmacy also usually sell everyday goods such as milk, toothpaste, snacks and more making your shopping trip as convenient as possible. Here are questions to ask when you are at a pharmacy.

  • How long will take to fill my prescription?
After you visit a doctor at a hospital you or your doctor will request a local pharmacy to fill your prescription. Some prescriptions take longer than others so it is good to have a heads up. Some pharmacies offer a technician 24 hours which means you can get prescriptions filled reliably quickly at any hour of the day. Also be sure to request from the technician any refills for the future at your local retail pharmacy to ensure you will be covered in the months to come.

  • Can I submit prescriptions online?
By requesting prescriptions online you can save yourself extra trips to the drug store. Consult your pharmacist or the doctor at your hospital about online ordering. Many clinics, veterinary offices and more offer online ordering for patients.

  • How long will I need to take medication for?
Your pharmacist and doctor will be able to recommend the duration of time your will need to take your medicine or pill. Some medication is to be taken until symptoms subside while others must be taken for a specific amount of time. A technician 24 hours will also be able to give you advice on questions specifically about your prescription.

Becoming a pharmacist, or chemist as the position is called in some places, involves a lot for schooling and dedication. Students must take up to two years of pre-pharmacy coursework at the college level, plus achieve a high score on the admissions test. They must get a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy, which typically takes about five years. They can also obtain a Doctor of Pharmacy degree which takes even longer. Students must then pass the state exam to become licensed. Usually, this is followed by an internship before taking on a position as a retail or drug store pharmacist. Some choose to go into veterinary pharmacy, a sub specialty of the field.

Services offered by pharmacies generally include access to a pharmacist, or pharmacy technician, 24 hours a day, online refills, and health consultations. Many pharmacies have heart rate monitoring devices located near the counter that patients can administer themselves.

In addition to dispensing medicine, whether in pill or liquid form, pharmacists should monitor for possible drug interactions between medications a patient is taking. This is a vital responsibility, as many patients take several drugs at one time, and compounding or mixing the wrong ones can be deadly. Pharmacies located within hospitals often feature access to technicians 24 hours a day, as hospitals never close. Some drug stores are also open at all hours, meaning you can head in there at 3 in the morning and fill your prescription if needed. Clinics also feature pharmacies, for use by doctors and nurses.

Whether you need assistance finding a particular over-the-counter cold medication, or help filling your prescription, you can have access to a pharmacist or technician 24 hours a day.
