Questions to Ask Massage Therapists

Massage therapists might offer the services that you need to relieve tension, stress or pain. Before you schedule an appointment at a massage parlor, you should know a few questions that will help you choose a good parlor where you can receive the type of physical therapy you need. Whether you need pain relief in your foot, back or neck, a massage therapist can help relieve what ails you.

  • Do you offer deep tissue and sports massage?
Deep tissue and sports massage techniques should target muscle pain while improving physical performance. If you have significant muscle pain or knots, then you might want to consider looking for a massage therapists that uses these techniques.

  • Have you taken classes from a certified massage school?
You want to choose a professional that knows how to use a variety of styles to promote well being. Massage therapists that have attended a certified school should have taken classes that prepare them properly.

  • Do you offer focused, as well as full body massage therapy?
You might want the therapist to concentrate on a specific part of your body. Perhaps you have experienced a sports injury, you have a cramp in your foot, or you experience frequent spasms in your back muscles. Choosing professionals that offer focused as well as full body services might meet your needs better than those that will not customize your massage.

  • Do you offer services to pregnant women?

Massage therapy can be a wonderful occupation to perform, especially if you enjoy helping people relax and improve their overall health. In order to become a therapist, you must take classes to be trained properly and take the time that's necessary to become fully certified, though this can vary from state to state.

Out of the 50 states, 37 have massage licensing laws that require minimum physical contact hours before you can work at a parlor or spa. These minimums can range from 330 to 1,000 hours and can take up to two years to complete. You can go above and beyond the regular school requirements to learn specialized muscle techniques such as Thai, other Asian techniques, Swedish and pregnancy services by either taking classes from a master or going to a school that teaches these techniques. Most schools teach standard methods like foot, back, and full body massage while you may have to search for a school that teaches deep tissue therapeutic techniques.

Once properly licensed, you can decide to either open your own parlor, join an already working spa, or try to get into sports therapy. If you decide to open your own place, you must learn the basics of business management and buy your own equipment such as tables, oil, and stones. Running your own business can be a pain, but you'll be able to choose your own hours and clients to help with stress relief. Advertising should be aimed towards strengthening well being and physical techniques in order to get the right foot traffic.
