Dance Companies

Dance companies or troupes can be made up either of professionals or amateurs. Professional dancers are usually trained in one specific dance art form, like jazz, hip hop, ballet, and tap. They are often on tour for weeks at a time, traveling from city to city on stage in various theaters and performing arts halls. The dancers may have attended formal dance academy schooling to learn this art form with many years of studio lessons under their belts.

Many have sub specialties of dance techniques including modern, African, interpretive, or Latin. To be a dancer, one must be versatile, flexible, and open to new ideas. Dancers should be comfortable performing in public, with a flair for the flashy. Other professionals involved in dance companies include costume artists, makeup artists, choreography teachers, set designers, and lighting experts. Musicians, such as members of an orchestra, are also present.

They all come together to provide a musical performance showcasing their level of talent. Dance enthusiasts who want to see a show can expect to purchase tickets either through the dancers themselves, at the dance facility, online, or through the dance company box office.

A dance company, troupe, or group may also offer lessons to students of all ages in the studio. They may hold seasonal camps to further train students on choreography of routines and style. An academy or school may hold competitions and recitals to go up against other area schools. Dance is just one branch of the performing arts, where skilled dancers come together to show off their style and talent through group and individual expression.

Dance companies offer such services as center instruction, studio, salsa, swing, tango, line dancing, facilities, tap, training, kids, performing, modern, choreography, dance wear, costumes and show services products and services. When choosing a dance company, research their background thoroughly. Choose a few different options to start with and contact each one. Ask for references, contact information, quotes and an outline of company policy. Ask how long they have been in operation and whether it is a local, national or multinational entity. Make sure the company you choose has proper licenses and certificates. When you contact the dance companies, ask them where they are located. You might find that some of the national companies have locations in your area. If you find the company on the Internet, then you should ask them if they are strictly an online entity or if they have a physical location as well. There are several questions that you might need to ask in order to determine which company can give you the dance company services that you need. Ask them if they provide products delivery services and if you will have to pay for them or if the costs are covered by the company. You should also ask the companies if they provide the types of classes that you want. Many companies offer lessons in contemporary dance styles such as hip hop, freestyle and jazz as well as lessons in traditional styles such as ballet and ballroom. When the companies' reps are answering your questions, pay attention to the level of courtesy that they use. This can often indicate how you will be treated in the future. By knowing what questions to ask, you should be able to find the dance company that is best for your dancing center, instruction and studio needs.
