Tips for Choosing Consignment Services
Consignment services offer gently used clothing at a discount price. Also known as resale shops, these stores sell second hand clothing, furniture, tool, toys and wedding gowns. You can even find some antique or vintage items if you search hard enough. This type of business is hit or miss, so it’s wise to check back often so you can obtain the best selection. Here are some tips when visiting a thrift store or consignment service:

Tip #1: Do Your Research on the Shop
If you wouldn’t shop at a particular consignment store yourself, don’t sell your stuff there. Ask if the shop keeps computerized records. These are much more accurate and less shady. Get the selling terms in writing so you can see all the hidden fees up front, if any. Some charge administration fees as well as a percentage cut, so be aware of these immediately before you sign.

Tip #2: Check out Store Layout
Visit the store beforehand to see how the clothing and furniture are displayed. If the clothing is tightly packed in, you may have concerns over how customers will get access to the clothing you’re looking to sell. Ultimately, you want a more open store layout with merchandise that is easily seen and accessed.

Tip #3: Watch the Owner Go Through Your Merchandise
When selling clothing or other items, sit with the owner and go through each one, making note of the condition. This is to avoid the owner claiming later that something had a tear in it or something was defective. If you go through it yourself with the owner, you know the exact condition and it’s duly noted.

Association of Resale Professionals
The members of our association provide all of the information necessary for any retail reselling needs or questions. Find out more about how you can make a difference by donating instead of throwing away items.

"Really bad experience the first time I went in. Just went in to browse and the woman at the counter acted as if I were an inconvenience. Thought she might be having a bad day, so I let it slide. Saw an item they listed on Craigslist and went back April 28th. Same woman, same bad attitude. Just plain rude. Never again. I had a number of estate items to consign, but brought them elsewhere. ..."

Plenty of women and men work in the consignment business. After all, this is a very large industry that incorporates local stores, as well as online shops and internet auctions. This can be a fun line of work to get involved with. Especially if you enjoy handling antique furniture, used clothing for men and women, vintage jewelry, and toys for children. There are so many items sold through consignment services every day. Needless to say, this is a very grand industry to get involved with, and there are a number of opportunities all over the country.

There is no specific college degree or education needed to work with second hand items in a consignment store or thrift shop. However, you will likely have to train some in the store you work in. Each day, you may have to help sell all kinds of baby shoes, pre-owned furniture, artwork, women’s apparel, and vintage collectible items. As you may know, many people bring items to consignment shops to be sold for them. This way, once the items are sold, they can collect a commission. Some merchandise you may have to deal with daily is old furniture, antique décor, children’s apparel, and used designer clothing for women. It really just depends on the location you are in, and what your consignment store accepts.

This line of work can get pretty hectic at times. After all, many people are interested in consignment items. You can expect to deal with a number of customers daily.
