Tips for Selecting a Cash Register
The following are some tips for selecting the right cash register to suit your needs.

Tip #1: Outline your cash register needs
Whether you run a small or a large business will greatly influence your cash register needs. Smaller businesses will need cash registers with fewer features. A system to calculate sales tax and perform other basic functions is basically all that a small business will need. Including a bar code scanner or scale is helpful for a retail or grocery store. Large volume locations with multiple registers will want a more advanced cash register system. These point of sale (POS) systems combine a cash register with basic computer software. They can track sales and inventory across multiple POS locations throughout a store.

Tip #2: Make different payment options available to customers
It is very important to offer customers the option of paying with something other than cash or a check. Many cash registers, particularly POS systems, can accept credit cards or debit cards. If you own a small business and cannot afford such an advanced machine, external credit card machines are available. Make sure you can provide your customers with a receipt, and you may want to select a printer that makes a separate receipt for your own records.

Tip #3: Check the provided warranty and company assistance
A warranty is essential when purchasing any major electronic item. Your cash register will probably have a limited warranty – expect it to last at least one or two years. More importantly, make sure the company you purchase your cash register from will be willing and able to assist you with any technical difficulties. They should at least provide you with a customer care hotline. Even better, some companies provide IT professionals that will come to your business. This service may be offered at an additional fee, especially if you did not recently purchase the product.

Cash registers, supplies and POS systems are often purchased direct from the manufacturer or from wholesalers. Supplies in particular are often acquired in large quantities.

Although small retail stores may purchase only a single register keep it for extended periods, many establishments require large numbers of tills. Additionally, many require a customized POS system containing both hardware and software. For example, the requirements of a restaurant are different from those of a casino. Some offices may need very simple systems. Meanwhile, a large chain retailer may have a POS system that tracks inventory across different stores. As sales may include customized software, wholesalers and manufacturers hire coders to make these designs. Salesmen need to be able to establish the specific needs of the customer.

Cash registers also print receipts. Because of this, the largest demand in terms of supplies is rolls of paper and ink ribbons. Even a small company may purchase these in considerable quantities. Replacement keys and cash drawers may also be sold. Large businesses may get considerable quantity discounts, and prove to be valuable accounts to the wholesaler.

Electronic transaction systems such as credit card readers are often sold as part of an integrated POS system. They may also be purchased separately. Again, the needs of the retailer need to be taken into account. Change machines are also used by some retailers.

Even though modern money transfer systems use less cash, we do not seem to be close to a 'cashless society'. Retail workers have to be able to handle cash, checks and card transactions, making POS systems more important and complicated. Their sales are part of the backbone of the retail and to an extent entertainment industries.
