Marinas can operate at various levels. Some of them are quite small. Others, however, provide docking and harbor services to entire fleets of fishing boats. The types of services and rentals that the marina offers will have an impact on what kinds of workers they employ. In general, however, popular marinas will need customer service representatives, mechanics, and managers to serve the needs of their clients.

The customer service reps will need to know about all of the rentals that the marina offers. Many of the companies will have recreational vehicles that are appropriate for family vacations. These vehicles include yachts, jet skis, house boats, and pontoons. Some marinas also offer commercial renting services. The customer service reps, therefore, might need to know about fishing boats and charter options.

The reps will also need to know information about the harbor, berths, and nearby waterways. Knowing this information gives them the chance to help customers choose buoys, boats, and yachts that are appropriate for surrounding harbors, canals, and wharfs.

Hiring a mechanic at the dock allows marinas to maintain their fleet of sailing and motor boats. This is often cheaper than hiring an independent mechanic. It also allows the dock to offer repair and maintenance services to club members.

Managers working for the marina often decide what types of products to purchase. This might include an assortment of fishing boats, yachts, buoys, and safety gear. The managers contact wholesale suppliers to secure the cheapest prices. This helps them keep costs low so that they can attract more customers to the boat yard.

Marinas offer maps, charts, waterfront, lighthouses, reservations, boat slips, sale, fishing, motor boat, cruise ship, guide, products, dock, yacht, businesses, membership, discounts and house boat services and experience. To find the most reputable marina, research the marina's background carefully, noting how long it has been in business, any affiliations, safety background and contact information. Visit with a few marinas before committing to see which one can meet your needs, whether you want to rent a sailboat for a family cruise or houseboat for a large party. If you're new to boating and need to take boating lessons, flag down marina staff and ask about lessons and prices. Marina staff should also be able to tell you about landmarks to see such as lighthouses, and other places of interest once you set sail. Be sure to grab some maps and charts. When making reservations, find out what the availability is, marina hours, rates and rules. Check out the marina's physical location closely, making sure it is neat and well maintained. Ask if the waterfront marina is a local, national or international company. When finding a marina for your needs, speak with several staff members to get a feel for the company. Are staff members courteous, reflecting a positive business attitude? Does the company offer the boats and services you are interested in? Is there a restaurant or resort close by? Be prepared to sign waivers, contracts and permissions, especially when renting a boat slip. When choosing a marina, make a detailed list of the boats and services each marina offers and get quotes on rates, taking note of the company's availability, hours and quality of service before choosing the one for you.
