Important Questions for Child Care Services

Although it is often necessary to use a child care service or daycare program, it is imperative to do your research prior to leaving your child, toddler, or infant with anyone. This is to ensure the safety of your baby or kid when he or she is left at a preschool, kindergarten class, or with a babysitter. Below is a list of questions you should ask a daycare service, preschool, or any nannies you are considering.

  • Are you a licensed caregiver or child care provider?
This is important because you need to know if the babysitters, nannies, or daycare facility is legitimate and qualified. Different development centers, preschools, and child care services may be qualified in different ways and to different degrees.

  • What are your references and education pertaining to child care?
It is always wise to check the references of any at-home nanny, babysitter, or daycare program you consider. This way you can be certain of their background and previous experience with caring for children.

  • What ages of children are you qualified to care for?
Depending on the daycare facility or program, they may be able to care for infants, toddlers, and small kids. However, some may only be able to care for certain age groups. It is important to find this out ahead of time.

  • Do you provide meals for the child?
While some preschools and care facilities provide lunch for the kids, others do not. Therefore you may need to pack a lunch at home, or choose a facility that offers lunches.

  • Is there social interaction and playing with other children?
Typically your child will interact with other kids, while at a daycare service. There may also be some learning with numbers and words as well as some arts and crafts to improve their overall education.
  • National Child Care Association

If you're looking to get into a licensed daycare, there are several positions you can apply for. Many centers have a high turn around rate, so with the right credentials and willingness to learn, you can secure a position. In order to be an official preschool teacher, you must have some college education in early childhood development courses or the working equivalent. Kindergarten teachers need a Bachelor's and state license. You must write lesson plans and set up a proper program for each age group you work with. Younger toddlers under two years old do not require extensive activity planning, but you should focus on proper social interaction and building up hand/eye coordination for a kid. Without previous experience, you may be able to work as a teacher's assistant. You will aid the children as they play, help feed them meals, and distribute materials for arts and crafts projects. Often teachers tap into their assistants for aid in lesson plans, but this is not always so. You'll be doing most of the "grunt work," but also having a stronger interaction with the an infant. Daycares are managed by a facility director and often at least one assistant director. These folks run the building, listen to complaints, and basically run interference between parents and preschool teachers. They have to have some teaching experience as well as business experience to properly run a care provider. If you plan on running a home-based facility, you must act as director and teacher. Nannies need to have the same education as center teachers, but must also be willing to work out of someone else's home with any age child. Often nannies have to live on site to help babysit at a moment's notice.
