Questions to Ask a Waste Management Company

Given that a lot of us regularly have our trash picked up by the garbageman, most people probably have a reasonably clear idea about what waste management companies do. Even so, if you've never hired a waste management company before, there are some important questions and considerations you should have in mind.

  • How should my waste materials be disposed of?
A lot of waste materials can be put in the trash can. Most forms of municipal solid waste--common household items like leftover food--fall into this category. Other waste materials, like aluminum cans, are typically required by law to be recycled properly. Still other types of materials are considered toxic to the environment--batteries and certain chemicals, for instance--and must be disposed of and sanitized in a regulated manner. Be sure to describe to the company exactly the type of materials you need to have collected. You want to avoid tossing materials into the trash if they need to be recycled, but you also don't need to hire a company to pick up your garbage if you can simply--and cheaply--throw it away yourself.

  • Are they insured?
These types of companies are routinely called upon to collect and transport hazardous, unsanitized solid materials. This is a potentially dangerous task, so a reputable company will carry insurance covering mishaps and damages that may occur.

  • How do they dispose of sensitive materials?
If you're hiring a waste management company to pick up paperwork that may contain personal information, such as old bank statements, you need to know exactly what they're going to do with it. A good company will not simply dump it into a landfill. Ask how they'll destroy the material, and if they're willing to provide documentation affirming that it has been disposed of properly.
