Questions to Ask Nannies

When hiring a nanny, you want to make sure that you choose the most qualified, trustworthy person you can find. Whether you decide to hire a nanny or babysitter on your own, or you choose to use a childcare agency to help you find a professional, you will want to know a few questions that can help you choose the type of person that you want around your children.

  • Do you have previous job experience and references?
You want to choose a babysitter or nanny that can do the job properly. That means finding someone with previous experience. Ask the person’s agency to give you references. That way, you can talk to his or her previous employers to determine how reliable they are.

  • Do you offer babysitting services during the night as well as the day?
You need to find someone who can accommodate your family’s schedule, so try to hire someone who can work evening and day hours. Even if you have a set work schedule, you might need to take time off some nights to enjoy yourself or do additional work from home.

  • Do you offer any housecleaning and cooking services?
Some nannies provide housecleaning and cooking services that make life easier for busy parents. Not all, however, feel that this is a part of their job. Even a live in governess might refuse to perform a duty that you feel is essential to running your home. You will, therefore, need to know what services a potential hire will provide outside of childcare.

Nannies are not simply baby sitters. Short term baby sitting is a job generally performed by family members, elder siblings, or by cheaper labor. Whether part time or full time, the nanny is part of the family for which she works. Recently, too, there has been a revival in the concept of the governess, albeit with a slightly different role. A governess assists with home schooling as well as nanny and care duties.

Most full time nannies live in the house with the family. They may eat with the family, and are commonly treated as a relative to some degree. The nanny may be provided with perks such as a car and a cell phone. In some cases, she may be expected to help with chores such as cleaning, as well as child care itself. It is not uncommon for her to cook lunch for the children.

In most cases, a nanny works during the day when the parents are busy. With very young children, she may be expected to be on duty at night. In some cases, especially with newborns, parents may hire a nanny solely to handle the night shift so that they can sleep. During the day, a nanny is expected to continue the parenting practices of the family. She may take children on outings or play with them.

Part time nannies may work part time or may work for more than one family. Their schedules and shifts vary, as a nanny may work two hours a day to fill in the after school gap. Although many work directly for their families, others are employed by a job agency. An agency may send nannies for short term situations such as parents wanting a vacation on their own.

Nannies can be paid well, and it is a rewarding profession if you like children.
