    A home health services agency hires workers trained to provide in-home medical services. Many of these workers are nurses, often with prior experience in hospitals. The work requires flexibility and the ability to deal with all kinds of situations. In some cases, a patient may be worked with for several years. In others, it may be occasional short periods to allow family caregivers to take vacations or a few months of rehabilitation and recovery. These nurses need to be able to make independent clinical decisions in an emergency.

    For patients with simpler needs, home health aides or attendants may be employed. These individuals are trained to give CPR, assist with medications and help with daily living tasks. However, they are not medical professionals.

    Most clients have some form of physical or mental disability. Seniors often seek to remain in their own homes rather than move to retirement housing. One of the challenges faced by workers for a health care agency is advising on the difficult decision of when such a move might be necessary. Seniors may also hire companions, who provide assistance in daily living and offer the elderly individual mental stimulation and company. Companions are sometimes volunteers, and may also perform tasks such as grocery shopping or driving a client to a dance or to the movies.

    Home health care services may be associated with a retirement center. In some cases, they may provide medical care close to the same level as a hospice. Thus, workers may be involved in end of life decisions. As there may be long term relationships involved, this can be difficult for many providers. They need to have annual physicals and take precautions to avoid transmitting disease. Although the vast majority provide services to adults, they may also work with disabled children and their parents.
