Questions to Ask a Factory Outlet

Many people shop at factory outlet stores hoping to find great deals on name brand products. If you are looking to find quality items at discounted prices, visiting an outlet mall or shopping at an online outlet may be the right solution for you. If you are considering shopping at an outlet store there are a few questions you should consider asking.

  • How much are the prices discounted from regular retail prices?
Some outlet stores offer merchandise at slightly reduced prices while others offer discounts of over 50% off. For example, some chain clothing outlet stores offer only small discounts, while designer outlets may offer very large discounts on out of season items. In many outlet stores, original prices are posted to show the amount of the discount, but if not you may want to ask. Knowing the original price will help you evaluate the deal you are getting.

  • What type of items do you typically carry?
Some outlet stores carry mostly overstock or out of season items. Others mainly have items that are blemished or have been returned to retail stores. If you are shopping for clothing, you may want to ask what sizes are typically available as well to see if the store usually has your size in stock. There may be certain days of the week or month that the store receives items, like retail overstock. Asking about this and planning your trip accordingly could maximize the deals you find.

  • Does your factory outlet store sell items online?
Some stores that are found in outlet malls also can be located online. Shopping online saves you a trip to the outlet store, especially, on days near the holidays when outlet malls are very busy.

The experience of shopping in a factory outlet is generally a bit different than that which customers could expect if visiting a more traditional retail environment. Particularly in older outlet malls, the surroundings tend to be more utilitarian and warehouse-like than first quality retail outposts. Older brick and mortar overstock stores, particularly those that are tied directly to the manufacturing site may take less care in setting up aesthetically pleasing clothing or merchandise displays or installing flattering lighting. This same aesthetic translates to the online shopping experience as well, with factory outlet versions of brand-name sites utilizing a more pared down look than their primary store address.

Customers are willing to forgo these luxuries for significant discounts on premium designer goods. The manufacturers and overstock retailers who operate these locations typically follow a similar sales cycle to those in a more traditional selling environment. This means in-store and online price breaks on end of season goods like electronics, appliances, auto parts and clothing. The same marketing tools are often employed to entice customers to buy as well, with limited time coupons available at most malls, and discounted financing on big purchases like furniture.

Outlet malls are not the only places where customers can get designer goods for wholesale prices. Sample sales, which feature a small selection of carefully edited goods by a single manufacturer, are becoming more commonly available to shoppers everywhere online and through large department stores. While these sales were once confined to luxury clothing and jewelry, home goods and furniture designers are now participating in such sales as well. Shoppers with a taste for luxury on a budget can find good deals on new merchandise through factory outlet malls.
