Important Terms to Know about Wholesale Fabric
Here are some terms that you should know when you talk to fabric wholesalers about buying their products or obtaining their services.

Madras: Madras is a lightweight fabric made from cotton. Madras fabric is commonly used to make lightweight summer clothes. Plaid, seersucker, and patchwork patterns are popular options.

Barkcloth: While barkcloth was originally made from the bark of South Pacific trees, much of the fabric today is actually made from cotton and rayon that has been textured to look and feel like the original material. This type of fabric is commonly used for upholstery, drapery, and slipcovers.

Fleece: There are actually numerous types of fleece material, including those that are woven or knit. This gives the material a variety of textures that designers can use in clothing.

Faux Leather: Faux leather is a material meant to duplicate the appearance and feel of real leather. It is, however, usually made of cotton fabric that has been coated in vinyl.

Crewel: Crewel is an embroidery method done by hand. It involves stitching yarn to cotton cloth to create a unique appearance that can vary significantly from one fabric to the next.

Chintz: Chintz is a cotton fabric that usually has usually been treated with a glaze. It is commonly used to upholstery, but is also useful for making lightweight apparel.

Cretonne: Cretonne is chintz fabric that has not been treated with a glaze. It is made by spinning slack twist and fine warp filling together.

With the advent of online distributors, it has become somewhat simple to find cheap prices on luxurious bulk textiles like silk chiffon from designer manufacturers or just everyday velour fleece. Whether you’re reupholstering your sofa with cotton broadcloth, quilting from remnants or sewing up some French lace curtains for your home, you can secure deals for much less than the retail price. But before you buy, make sure that you are getting the right deal by asking these questions.

  • What is the minimum amount of fabric I must buy to receive the wholesale discount?
You may need to buy a 12-yard bolt, or it could be a minimum amount, such as $100. Think about whether your pattern calls for this much fabric, or if you'll have use for the overage.

  • Do you provide textile swatches?
By ordering swatches, you can ensure that the color and print look the same as on your computer screen. You will also be able to experience the fabric’s texture, which is important whether you're making clothing or upholstery. Expect to pay a small fee for swatches.

  • Can you help me with yardage questions?
Perhaps you have a clothing pattern but don’t know how much jersey cotton you’ll need to sew your garment, or maybe you’re just not sure how much linen it will take to make those slipcovers. A wholesale company with good customer service will help you with these questions.

  • What do you charge for shipping?
If you’re buying online, be sure to inquire about the shipping charge.

  • Do you take returns?
Ask about returns, and also find out if there will be a warehouse restocking fee and who will pay for the return shipping.
