Finding the right licensed childcare center for your child may help with his or her separation anxiety at drop off. If the daycare professionals understand your child’s temperament and can meet his or her needs, your infant will feel secure. To locate the daycare program with the best fit you can interview several daycare providers. The following questions may be helpful.

  • How does the facility keep toddlers safe and healthy?
    Ask the daycare provider to give you an example of how he or she keeps children safe and well. Teachers who use hand sanitizer regularly keep bacteria from spreading from infant to child. Toys and play surfaces that are wiped down by providers with disposable towels and bleach keep children safe from runny noses, sweaty feet, and diaper waste. When kindergarten kids play with toys and on equipment at the facility that is age-appropriate they are less likely to become injured.

  • How are kids grouped?
    When kids feel accepted by their peers and protected by the daycare instructors, they gain a positive impression of school. Maybe the daycare separates children by age and gender for most of the day, except for craft time. Perhaps kids are divided during playtime according to ability to run, kick, and throw. Maybe the children who prefer quieter projects such as crafts can be encouraged to join singing time with the whole group for a fun balance.

  • How does the daycare handle bad behavior of children?
    Authority can make a child feel protected and safe. However, if punishments are too harsh a child may rebel. When daycare providers tell the child what is expected and what happens if he or she disobeys, children will know how to behave in society. Ask about the various activities, fitness programs, play areas, social activities, reading areas, and other resources available for your child's age group, whether baby or preschool child. If the center is part of a church, be sure to inquire what religious aspects will be incorporated into the curriculum. Find out if the center accepts your child's age group, such as infant, baby, toddler, preschool child or older child. And don't forget to ask if the center offers weekend care, in addition to weekday care, as well as morning, afternoon and after school care. Make sure the costs and rates fit your budget as well. Inquire about day care laws and rules in your state, such as those concerning morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Before choosing a day care center, keep in mind location, availability, programs, costs, age groups, and experience.
