What A Crisis Intervention Service Can Do for You

When a person contacts a crisis intervention center, they are usually immediately connected to a mental health counselor who is trained to assist them with a wide range of life issues. A hot line is usually available 24 hours a day for crisis intervention centers, since emergencies rarely occur during normal business hours. When a call is received, the first step is for the counselor to thoroughly evaluate the situation, whether it was a case of domestic violence, rape or substance abuse. No matter what the situation might be, the caller can rest assured the crisis intervention counselor will not offer judgment on the person's actions; they are simply there to evaluate the problem and offer help to prevent further issues from occurring.

A primary concern for a crisis intervention counselor is for the safety of the caller and the people around them. This is particularly true if there are relationship problems that could end in abuse or a possible suicide. Because the counselor is first trained to assist with safety, he may ask the caller questions about thoughts of harming himself or others. Whether the caller is an adolescent, youth or adult, there is always the need to prevent an additional crisis after the first has occurred. Once the initial crisis is somewhat stabilized and under control, the intervention counselor can then provide additional assistance or therapy to provide ongoing mental health counseling as needed. In this case, a referral to another type of counseling team might be in order to ensure the original caller gets the specific assistance they need to deal with life issues, anxiety or family and relationship problems. Crisis intervention is the first line of help and therapy for people with a mental health need of any kind.

If you need crisis intervention services, then you will not contact those in your area to find out what sorts of services they provide. By following these guidelines, you should be able to choose the one that is best for you. There are a variety of services that a crisis intervention group might offer, including intervention services for drug and alcohol abusers, counseling for those who are the victims of family or domestic violence, therapy for victims of rape, and assistance for youth and adults who need psychiatric or mental health services. Many also offer prevention services. Prevention services often teach people life strategies that help them cope with difficult events in their lives. Ask the groups which kinds of services they specialize in and find out how long they have been performing these services. Those with many years of experience can often provide the best counseling, assistance, therapy, prevention, intervention services, and other types of help. Make sure that the counselors and doctors who work for the organizations are fully licensed and experienced. Therapeutic services are often an important step in recovery from traumatic events, so you'll want to make sure that the counselors have plenty of experience. Many people often feel that it is difficult for them to offer their loved ones the help they need. Ask the group if they have intervention services that include everyone involved as a team. Once you have found a crisis intervention group that offers the services you need, you should ask when they can see you. If you are experiencing a crisis, then you might need to use their hot line to contact someone for immediate services.
