Countless travelers stay at RV parks and campgrounds. In fact, there are well over 10,000 privately operated or state-run RV parks in the U.S. If your family plans to make arrangements to visit one of these sites while traveling in a recreational vehicle, there are some important considerations you should first think about.

  • What kind of facilities does the site have?
    Campgrounds and RV parks vary considerably in the kinds of amenities they provide. Dry camping sites provide no potable water or electrical outlets for trailers. Conversely, some other parks provide extras such as cabins, wi-fi hotspots, and exercise equipment. The length of your stay will play a big part in your decision. If you're simply parking your recreational vehicle overnight to sleep, there is no sense in paying for access to facilities you will never use. Also, keep in mind that some campgrounds charge separately for the use of certain amenities, while other parks simply have a flat fee that covers everything.

  • What kinds of rules does the park enforce?
    Every park has its own set of restrictions. Many campgrounds have strict rules regarding dogs--often, you will be required to keep them on a leash at all times, while certain large breeds may not be allowed entrance at all. The use of motorcycles and other small motorized vehicles tends to be restricted. If you plan to pitch a tent or build a wood-burning fire, you should also check to ensure you do not break any rules.

  • How will I be charged?
    Typically, RV parks will bill you by the day, the week, or the month, although other arrangements are possible. You should find out how you will be billed if you end up parking your trailer longer than you planned.

    Whether you're looking for full hookups or a simple tent site, campgrounds and recreational vehicle parks have the spots you need. They offer several services to travelers on vacation, such as online reservations, free wi-fi, cabins, and daily activities. The professionals working at campgrounds don't necessarily need a higher education, but they may need to consent to a background check if they will be continually working with children.

    It's good to have solid communication skills in this business, as well as a love for the outdoors. They should know the policies of the campground and make sure all campers follow the rules.
