Ambulance Service FAQs
There are many contributing teams when it comes to first responders and emergency room services. The following frequently asked questions can help us better understand the ambulance service:

Are ambulance services public or private?
Ambulance services are both public and private. Public ambulance transport is available through your city or town. These are the paramedics that arrive after 911 has been called. Private service also works along side of public ambulances. They often provide transportation of critical patients from one medical facility to another. There are also private paramedic companies that provide helicopter transport in the case of severe trauma.

What kind of training do ambulance EMTs have?
There are two types of emergency medical technicians. A basic EMT is required to undergo roughly 100 to 150 hours of training in order to become certified as a first responder. Paramedics, on the other hand, go through more than 1,000 hours of training, and are often awarded associates degrees through the training program. When 911 is called, you will often be sent at least one EMT and one paramedic.

Are ambulance services covered by insurance?
If you have been treated by a public ambulance service, your bill is often absorbed by one of several sources. Often, the local government provides funding in addition to private donations. But your medical insurance should also have information about deductibles and co-pays for an ambulance ride. Private companies, on the other hand, are often much more expensive and not always covered by insurance. Often this varies by region and state, so it is wise to do the research ahead of any emergencies you may encounter.

"I have been taken by ambulance several times. This was the worst experience I have ever had. It took them forever to get to my house. Once in the ambulance, there was hardly any supplies. Not like it was when the other ambulance service took me. I would call someone else. ..."

In the event of an emergency, when you dial 911 to get help for someone suffering from a heart attack or serious injury, paramedics come rushing to help. However, ambulance services are not just reserved for immediate attention; they can also be chartered to transport patients that need special medical attention while moving from a hospital to a home, from one private nursing facility to a new one. If you need these services, try asking some of the following questions to determine which company is right to help you transport your loved one.

  • What equipment do you carry on your vehicle?
For patients that are in hospice care, and moving between medical facilities and their homes, they will need specific equipment to help maintain their comfort and health. For instance, many ambulances carry air tanks, defibrillators in the event of a heart-attack, and other rescue equipment that can help save a person's life.

  • Are all of your personnel up to date with training and certifications?
Most emergency transportation vehicles are staffed by paramedics or EMTs. These individuals must undergo rigorous training in order to enter this field, and are required to renew their certifications every few years. It is important that they not only know how much air or medicine to administer to one of their victims, but how to perform CPR according to the latest regulations.

  • What are the costs of this service?
Traveling by ambulance can become extremely expensive, especially depending on how often the person must be moved. Private companies will vary on how much they charge per trip, and may vary costs depending on the individual's insurance plan, or whether or not he or she has hospice care.
