Questions for clothing alteration

Going to a party and realize that old suit in the closet just doesn't fit like it used to? Tired of constantly fiddling with shirts that don't fit across the shoulders or chest? A secret to looking fabulous in your clothes is that for the best look, you need the best fit. This is where altering clothes comes in. A garment that has been properly altered by a professional not only looks more expensive, but will also make the wearer feel better about wearing it. If you are considering using a clothing alteration store, the following questions are guidelines for the services they offer.

  • What types of services do they have?
Most tailors, the professionals who alter your clothes, will offer the following services: shortening the sleeves of a jacket or shirt, taking in dresses and suits that no longer fit by way of adding additional seams, along with hemming jeans, pants and skirts.

  • Is it expensive?
This depends on the garment. While formal-wear will often cost a little extra, most altering services are surprisingly inexpensive to sew and repair. Some buyers, especially those with difficult in-between sizes or plus sizes, would gladly spend this small amount of money so that their clothes would fit them correctly.

  • Where can I find a tailor?
Often, dry cleaners have tailors who work for them performing clothing alterations. This is convenient for the customer who can both have their clothes cleaned and altered, with some stores offering same-day services. Other tailors operate independently. Check your local listings to find a clothing alteration store near you.

Tailors and seamstresses often receive formal instruction. This is generally offered by community and technical colleges. Fashion and design students also commonly take such courses.

Some tailors alter clothing and make entire custom garments. Others only handle alterations. It is common for these services to be offered by dry cleaners along with apparel repairs. Needless to say, the ability to sew is the most important skill. After that, being able to take measurements and handle fitting sessions is important. Formal wear stores may also have individuals on site capable of handling alterations. Wedding and prom dresses often have to be adjusted, as do suits.

Dry cleaners are more likely to perform very simple work such as taking in a seam or shortening the hem of a pair of pants. They also handle repairs, of which replacing zippers and buttons are often the most common. Normally, they work with cheaper items such as jeans and shirts. Suits and dresses are often best handled by a specialist tailor. However, these outlets offer same day service and some may specialize in plus size apparel. Often, these stores also offer laundry service, especially for shirts.

Finally, some tailors and seamstresses work as freelancers. They may advertise online or by word of mouth and often work out of their homes. Most work on all kinds of clothing, but some may have specialties. For example, some specialize in bridal and formal wear. Others may work mostly with children's clothing. Some specialize in exotic apparel such as theatrical costumes.

The primary requirements are an ability to sew, an eye for fit, and the ability to work quickly with an eye to the customer's desires.
