Questions to Ask about Air Conditioning & Heating Service and Repair

A lot of us have trouble imagining life without air conditioning, which is found in a wide variety of home and office settings. But when air conditioning units break down, you may not know to best way to have them repaired. If you're going to hire a repairman, there are a few questions you may wish to ask.

  • Are they certified?
It isn't mandatory, but it may be a good idea to seek out a repairman who carries certification from North American Technician Excellence (NATE). Also, the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) offers certification. You may wish to look for anything that indicates training in HVAC systems. (HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning.) While you're at it, you should also ask whether the repairman carries liability insurance.

  • Should the air conditioner be repaired or replaced?
In many cases, this will be a judgment call on your part, but there are some considerations to keep in mind. Often, air conditioners are merely dirty or clogged; if so, a little cleaning will set them right. However, your air conditioner might be considerably older and less efficient than current models; if so, it may be unable to provide adequate heating or cooling, even if working correctly. A repairman skilled in HVAC system maintenance may be able to tell you--especially if he or she is able to personally visit your location--whether making an upgrade might save you money in the long run.

  • What can I do to avoid future problems?
Many people don't realize that routine cleaning of an air conditioner can often be performed without professional help and it can extend the life of the appliance. Ask your repairman how to perform simple cleaning and maintenance tasks.

The air conditioning and heating service industry is made up of engineers, technicians, and company representatives that must work together for their customers to get all of the services that they need for their cooling and heating systems.

The engineers and technicians are often the most skilled workers in this industry because they need training that prepares them to perform maintenance, installation, and repair services for a variety of systems. Many of the professionals have experience with residential furnaces, commercial refrigeration units, and industrial HVAC systems. Knowing how to repair these systems requires knowledge of electrical systems as well as an understanding of the client's building. For instance, a technician working on an industrial HVAC system needs to know what types of duct designs will provide the best ventilation. Some repair and maintenance companies even employ engineers that design residential and commercial systems. These systems often include furnaces, central air, and ventilation units.

When you contact a company to get information about the repair, installation, and maintenance services that they offer, you will more than likely speak to a customer service representative. These employees provide information to potential clients and schedule meetings for the technicians and engineers. While they do not usually have technical training, they are an essential part of the business because they help the technicians coordinate their schedules with clients.

When these employees work together, clients tend to get the services that they need. When they do not, however, you never know what kind of services you will get. Ask the companies for references to help you decide which ones are reliable and professional enough to take care of your air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating systems.
