Important Terms to Know About Adjusters
Claims adjusters, usually found in the field of insurance, evaluate loss by an insured party to estimate how much it will cost for repair or replacement, then authorized payment for said claim. For a homeowners’ insurance claim over a particular dollar amount, these professionals will come out to your home to evaluate the damage. For smaller amounts, they may adjust the loss from their office. Adjusters usually work within an insurance firm, although some work independently as consultants. Here are some important terms to know about claims adjusters when investigating this insurance topic.

Claim Examiner: Also known as a claims adjuster, this is the person in charge of investigating and settling a claim.

Claimant: An individual who presents a claim. A claim is a request for payment under the insurance policy’s terms.

Reinspection: When an adjuster does a review of an estimate or appraisal after repairs are done to a vehicle.

Proof of Loss: A statement about a particular claim and what it entails, usually requested in accordance with policy conditions.

Payment Recovery Examiner: The person in charge of recovering a claimant’s deductible from another party’s insurance company.

Medical Claim Examiner: Person in charge of reviewing medical bills, replacement services and lost wages for injuries sustained by the claimant.

Limits of Liability: A specified amount in an insurance policy stating how much an insurance company will pay to protect its policyholders in a claim.

Liability Examiner: Person in charge of handling an accident investigation, with responsibilities involving collision payments, bodily injury settlements and property damage payments.

After you suffer damage or a loss to your home, automobile or income, you'll need to file a claim to your insurance company. An adjuster that represents your insurance carrier will determine how much of the gross cost of your claim the company will pay. If you are unsatisfied with the offer, you have the option to hire a public adjuster to review your case and act as an advocate to determine if the company owes you a larger percentage for the gross cost of your loss. When looking for a public adjuster, ask these questions to make sure you find the most qualified individuals to represent your claim.

  • Are you licensed and certified as a public adjuster?
To work legally as a public adjuster, a license from your state's Department of Insurance is mandatory. Ask when the adjuster's license is due to expire. You can also contact the department yourself to confirm the credentials of prospective adjusters. Certification from the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters is voluntary. Hiring a certified public adjuster ensures that the professional you hire has met specific professional standards established by the APIA.

  • In what do you specialize?
Many public adjusters have a particular area of expertise. Some work with claims that involve disability insurance, which provides sources of income if you are injured or sick and unable to work. Others work with total losses from automobile accidents or damage to commercial property.

  • What are your fees?
Public adjusters receive a percentage of the amount that your insurance company pays you on your claim. A reputable adjuster should explain to you their sliding scale for fees and be able to justify why you will be charged a specific rate. If you have already received a partial claim, ask the adjuster if they will expect a percentage of that or not.
