Many furniture novices are intimidated by knowledgeable shopkeepers and dealers who seem unapproachable. But a little poking and prodding can usually turn up the facts about any piece of furniture. Here are a few questions consumers should ask before bringing a piece of used furniture home.

  • Where does your inventory come from?
    Reputable furniture dealers should have no problem sharing the provenance, or origin, of their merchandise. Knowing where an item comes from is especially important for consumers who are concerned about bringing mold, bed bugs and other health hazards into their home or office.

  • Has this piece been independently appraised?
    Consignment and antique shops are free to put any price they want on an item. But it never hurts to ask how they got to that price. If their price is not what it should be, let them know. This issue is especially important when purchasing vintage furnishings.

  • What is the return policy?
